As a subdivision of the larger field of sociology, criminology draws on psychology, economics, anthropology, psychiatry, biology, statistics, and other disciplines to explain the causes and prevention of criminal behavior. Subdivisions of criminology include penology, the study of prison system; biocriminology, the study of the biological basis of criminal behavior; feminist criminology, the study of women and crime; and criminalistics, the study of crime detection, which is related to the field of Forensic Science.

Privileges of Certified Criminologists in the Philippines:
All certified criminologist shall be exempt from taking any other entrance or qualifying government or civil service examinations and shall be considered civil service eligible to the following government positions: (1) dactylographer, (2) ballistician, (3) questioned document examiner, (4) correctional officer, (5) law enforcement photographer (6) lie detection examiner, (7) probation officer, (8) agents in any law enforcement agency, (9) security officer, (10) criminal investigator, or (11) police laboratory technician.
Certified criminologists shall also be eligible for appointment as patrolman in chartered cities and municipalities, provided they possess the general qualifications for appointment provided in section nine, Republic Act Numbered forty-eight and sixty-four. (Sec. 24, Republic Act No. 6506)

In the Philippines:
A criminologist is any person who is a graduate of the Degree of Criminology, who has passed the examination for criminologists and is registered as such by the Board. (Sec. 22, Republic Act No. 6506)

Other Privileges:
Lateral Entry of Officers into the PNP. – In general, all original appointments of commissioned officers in the PNP shall commence with the rank of inspector, to include all those with highly technical qualifications applying for the PNP technical services, such as dentist, optometrists, nurses, engineers, and graduates of forensic sciences. Doctors of medicine, members of the Bar, and chaplains shall be appointed to the rank of senior inspector in their particular technical service. Graduates of the Philippine National Police Academy (PNPA) shall be automatically appointed to the initial rank of inspector. Licensed criminologists may be appointed to the rank of inspector to fill up any vacancy after promotions from the ranks are completed. (Sec. 33, Republic Act No. 6975)
